Musical Analysis #1 Rustin in the Rain
Analysis of Tyler Childers "Rustin In The Rain"
This song was one of the first 'country' songs I ever liked. Tyler Childers does neo-traditional country, which I have found to be my preferred kind of country music. The upbeatness of the song, the loudness and passion in Childers voice, and the electric guitar riff are all components that get me up on my feet and clapping to this song every time. It reminds me of the rush of adrenaline when you're playing Mario Kart on Rainbow Road, and you get that magic mushroom that makes you go super fast, and all you can do is hold on and hope you don't fly off.TEMPO
I think the part of this song that separates it the most from Childers other work is the tempo, as it's so fast-paced, critics from Holler compared it to a freight train. Even though the song is in 4/4 meter, the piano and guitar riffs make it feel much faster and give a sort of chugging sensation to the song.
MELODY
For the vocal aspects of the songs, Childers offers a wide range, consisting of a low, gritty singing to loud belting, giving a "shouting from the rooftops" effect. He alternates between holding notes out and cutting them off very agressively making the song feel like it keeps changing pace or like it's going down a windy road. To add to the intensity, during the last section of the song, the key changes, and Childers sings the chorus faster and higher-pitched to make a strong finish.
STRUCTURE
The structure of the song is a little different than most modern music. It starts with an electric guitar riff and drums that set the pace of the song at 114 bpm. Then Childers immediately jumps into the first verse, no pre-chorus, and the chorus. There's virtually no break before he jumps into the second verse and chorus. This is where the 30-second instrumental solo occurs. Critics from The Musical Hype described it as having blues-inspired piano riffs and frenetic electric guitar riffs. It also sets up the key change. Then Childers finishes off with the chorus a third time in this new key until the finale, where all the instruments stop at the same time and fade out quickly like a chainsaw being turned off mid cut.
