Music Analysis #2 My Lady of Mercy

Analysis of "My Lady of Mercy" by The Last Dinner Party

The Last Dinner Party is one of my favorite bands and they are British indie-rock which is way different than my normal music taste. I fell in love first with their song "Nothing Matters" and went to look at the whole album and quickly became obsessed with every song on it! I chose this song because I think it's is the most unique and interesting song off the album with the way that the entire tone and energy of the song changes so fast from the verse to the chorus is gives you whiplash, but in a good way.

DYNAMICS

Something interesting this song plays with, which you will especially notice if wearing headphones, is the dynamics or the volume changes. During the verses the song is quieter, lighter, and more restrained because of the quiet instruments and lower register of the singer. During the chorus the dynamic changes and the instruments go impossibly louder with the vocalist matching that volume. Critics from ones to watch described it as building from a controlled opening into a powerful climax.

TEXTURE

Another element that this songs plays with is texture. The song makes the dichotomy of the verse and chorus more intense by having simple instrumentals during the verse and many layers of instruments and vocal harmonies during the chorus. Critics from ones to watch described it as layers of intensifying guitar and thrumming bass. The outro of the song is very loud and intense making the texture dense and full and very angsty. The critics described it as "a collage of wailing vocal harmonies, intricate guitar plucks, and boiling percussion,".

TIMBRE

The timbre or color of the song is dark, gothic, and dramatic through the distinctive guitar tones and almost opera-like vocals. Critics described it as ,"brooding instrumentation, and enamoring vocals that bring listeners to their knees in sweet exultation."

RYTHYM

The rhythm, or the pulse, of the song in the verses is strong and propels the song forward with force and excitement. It seems to blend into the background during the chorus but that's because of the way the vocals and instrumental riffs take over. The rhythm stays present and comes back in shortly for the second verse very strong.

MELODY

The melody of this song is carried by the vocalist and jumps around the instrumentals in a way that makes the song feel very theatrical and whimsical at parts. During the verses it's playful and low, almost skipping with the beat. During the chorus it turns long and drawn out, ebbing and flowing with the drums.

  1. I loved that song! I hadn't heard the band before, but I'm listening to the rest of the album as I write this. One of my favorite parts of the song was the dynamics of it, and I think you did a great job going over them in your analysis. The way the instruments sounded when the song would hit its loudest parts, and the singer's sudden vocal shift, is what made me like it so much. I think the best part of your analysis was how you went over the texture. Overall, great analysis.
